Mayor Muriel Bowser is rolling out the big bucks for Big Retail in the nation's capital. The head honcho of Washington DC and the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) have called on the city's retail warriors to step up to the plate and grab a piece of the $10,000 pie through the 2024 Robust Retail Grant Program. According to a press release, the application gates are wide open until April 15, with a lucky draw determining the 48 recipients of this year's grant spoils.

"Investing in retail businesses means more jobs and greater opportunities for Washingtonians," Bowser proclaimed, solidifying the initiative's stance as a job creator and dream fulfiller for the entrepreneurial spirits of DC. Under the watchful eye of the Mayor and the DSLBD, almost 500 establishments have gotten a financial boost since 2019, with a cool $4 million having previously been doled out to uplift the community's marketplace. In a statement by Acting DSLBD Director Rosemary Suggs Evans obtained by the release, she stated, "The Robust Retail grant affords our brick-and-mortar businesses a real opportunity for economic growth by reducing some of the financial burdens that may be holding them back."

Qualifying for the golden ticket means checking the right boxes – under 25 full-time employees, a licensed retail spot to call home, and proudly bearing the for-profit, small, and independent label. The cash injection can be put towards everything from covering staff wages to keeping the lights on or even stocking up on must-have merchandise. And those who've transitioned online or amped up delivery services are covered, too.

With the promise of financial relief, businesses are eyeing the grant as a life raft in a sea of expenses like rent, insurance, and even taxes. And the good news will come knocking during DC Small Business Week, slated for April 28 to May 4, according to the official announcement.
