Quick action from the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District led to the arrest of a robbery suspect over the weekend in Southeast D.C. In what was a swift response to a midday crime, a man was apprehended after he robbed another individual and later assaulted a police officer.
The incident occurred on Saturday, March 9, when at about 12:55 p.m., Gardner Bradley, 59, of Southeast reportedly approached a man on the 3900 block of 4th Street. Bradley is accused to have suddenly attacked the victim and made off with his belongings. Following the crime, officers sprang into action and were able to quickly track down Bradley to a nearby apartment.
Even with the suspect cornered, the situation escalated. As police moved in to make the arrest, Bradley allegedly didn't go down without a fight. In a struggle that ensued, an officer was assaulted. The details of the confrontation weren't immediately clear, but the outcome was with Bradley in handcuffs.
According to an official release from the MPD, "Responding officers tracked the suspect to a nearby apartment. The suspect assaulted one of the officers as he was taken into custody." These direct actions led to the rapid detention of the assailant.
Bradley now faces charges of Robbery and Assault on a Police Officer. His arrest brings a measure of closure to the incident, albeit another stark reminder of the undercurrents of violence that seem to perpetually surge through the streets of the nation's capital.
