In a shocking display of friendly fire, a Miami Beach Police officer was shot in the leg by another officer during a confrontation on the Venetian Causeway. The wounded officer was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Trauma Center with injuries thankfully classified as non-life-threatening, as confirmed by the Miami Beach Police Department.
According to reports from NBC Miami, the incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon when two officers were attempting to apprehend what was believed to be an armed individual. In a twist of fate, accidentally, the shooter discharged her weapon, hitting her colleague instead of the intended target.
Witness Jeremy Mohler, who found himself a mere stone's throw away from the action, described the abrupt escalation to reporters, saying, "It looked like he was having some issues and was being aggressive with her, at least vocally, and she just jumped out the car and ran with a gun right by me." Seconds later, he added, "Another cop was running from the other way and from what I could tell it looked like the bullet hit him in the leg," per his recollection shared with NBC Miami.
Video captured by bystanders showed the chaotic aftermath, including the injured officer's appeal for a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding. "I need a tourniquet!" the officer exclaimed while his fellow officers scrambled to provide aid, detailed in a report by WSVN. The man believed to be the cause of the callout was subsequently detained and questioned.
In a display of solidarity, fellow law enforcement from Miami Beach, City of Miami, and Miami-Dade Police were seen gathering at the hospital to support the injured officer. The incident, which caused a significant disruption on the causeway with traffic lanes closed for several hours, was confirmed not to be related to spring break activities. As the investigation continues to piece together the events that led to this mishap, community members and eyewitnesses like Mohler hope to move past the memory of this day's violence, expressing a need to "process it all with my buddies and work through that," he lamented in his witness account to NBC Miami.
