Miami Beach police are putting high school seniors on notice: skip school for "Senior Skip Day," and you may find yourself hauled right back to the classroom. The Miami Beach Police Department's Community Affairs Unit took to social media to deliver a stern warning to students considering ditching school on the widespread unofficial holiday.

"We would like to remind students that skipping during school hours is considered truancy," Officer Hector Guzman stated in the video posted on Wednesday. Students could be detained, and taken back to school that day, even though parents allow them to miss school," WSVN reported. In defiance of traditions that often see the day as a harmless rite of passage, law enforcement plans to enforce attendance regulations with a heavy hand.

Senior Skip Day, a day when high school seniors traditionally blow off school to spend the day at the beach or partaking in other leisure activities, is being met with a proactive stance by police this year. The Miami Beach Police intend to patrol public areas like beaches and parks, on the lookout for absentee students.

Any infractions, such as fighting, smoking or drinking, could lead to students being arrested, said the police. "Officers will be patrolling public areas, like beaches and parks," Guzman warned in the message. This preemptive strike by the authorities was also echoed by the Miami Herald via X, advising Miami's seniors to think twice before cutting class.

The crackdown reflects a tightening of rules around truancy, as well as concerns about juveniles' safety during unsupervised activities. It serves as a clear sign that Miami Beach Police are not treating the day as lightly as students might hope, with potential legal consequences looming for those who defy the attendance policy.
