Michael Ketchum, a 46-year-old Michigan prisoner with a history of violent crimes, is facing a first-degree murder charge for the alleged killing of his cellmate, announced the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. After a recent court appearance, Ketchum will see the inside of a Macomb County Circuit Court, with arraignment set for April 1. This incident could potentially lead to a life sentence without parole if he is convicted.
Ketchum is also charged with assault with intent to murder and being a prisoner in possession of a weapon, in connection with a separate attack on another inmate. According to ClickOnDetroit, the accusations stem from a brutal event that unfolded on October 18, 2022, when Ketchum reportedly stabbed an inmate several times in the head, neck, and arm after breakfast. Following the assault, authorities discovered Ketchum's cellmate deceased, hidden under a bed, tied up, and with fatal strangulation and stab injuries.
In a statement obtained by The Detroit News, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido expressed his commitment to justice, saying, "It is my duty to ensure justice prevails, especially for those who can no longer speak for themselves. This defendant, who allegedly took the life of his cellmate, will face the consequences of his actions." Additional charges from Ketchum's sordid criminal history, which includes armed robbery, kidnapping, and operating a meth lab, intensify the gravity of his latest alleged offenses.
The repercussions of this case could be vast, as the penal system confronts yet another act of violence within its walls. Following the incident, Ketchum was transferred to the Ionia Correctional Facility, as reported by CBS Detroit.
