According to KSAT, Katrina Mendoza stood witness against Jose Ruiz, aiming to unveil the horrific details which led to her daughter's demise. Mendoza, who herself faces charges and a potential 45-year sentence, took to the stand under a plea agreement with the prosecution.
The tragic narrative unfolded as Mendoza recalled her relationship with Ruiz, which began at a strip club and quickly involved her two daughters, to whom Ruiz was introduced as a father figure. The evidence weighed heavily, jurors learned, of the extreme physical abuse that was a constant in the young girl's life. Mendoza described the cruel punishments-induced by Ruiz, such as mopping the floor with the child in her urine, and images of dog feces smeared on her face – contents horrific enough to leave courtroom observers in tears.
While Mendoza holds the bleak likelihood of incarceration over her head, she did not falter in implicating Ruiz as the principal agent of their child's suffering. "Jose beat her to death ... the abuse piled up, and she died," Mendoza said in a testimony that detailed brutal discipline measures. "He would spank them, he would pull Mercedes’ hair and cover her mouth and nose. Use thumbtacks on her feet," Mendoza told KSAT.
