A Mount Clemens neighborhood was gripped by tension yesterday morning as a 27-year-old man barricaded himself inside a home on Park Street, resulting in a standoff with Macomb County Sheriff's deputies and a lockdown at a nearby preschool. The ordeal began around 8:30 a.m. when deputies arrived in response to a shots fired call. According to authorities, the armed man refused to exit the residence, which also housed children believed to be in potential danger.
The standoff ended without violence as the suspect eventually chose to quietly surrender shortly after 10 a.m. Deputies were able to safely remove the children from the home, where they were then examined by medical professionals to ensure their well-being, The Detroit News states. Throughout the incident, L'Anse Creuse Learning Academy was put on lockdown as a security measure due to its proximity to the scene.
Authorities initially found their attempts to gain access thwarted as the man kept doors locked and refused entry to law enforcement. To quickly and safely resolve the situation, Sheriff's deputies established a perimeter and utilized special tactics teams, which included SWAT, canine units, and drones, according to the FOX 2 Detroit coverage of the incident. The standoff ended following the arrival of a SWAT vehicle, which seemed to play a part in the suspect's decision to surrender, as mentioned by Macomb Daily.
While the suspect has been taken into custody, at the time of the reports, no information was made available regarding whether a firearm was indeed present or recovered by deputies. "Currently, the suspect is in custody and there is no danger to the community relating to this incident," the Macomb Sheriff's Office stated in a release, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. Macomb County Sheriff's Office deputies continued to carefully investigate the scene into the afternoon, and formal charges against the man are expected to be laid down later within the week.
