MTSU Celebrates National Women's History Month with "Women of True Grit" Conference and Trailblazer AwardsSource: Middle Tennessee State University

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is shining a well-deserved spotlight on some remarkable women this month. In a move that's as bold as it is inspiring, the institution is hosting the “Women of True Grit” Conference and Trailblazer Awards on Tuesday, part of their commemorations for National Women’s History Month. The stage at Tucker Theatre in the Boutwell Dramatic Arts Building will be set for stories of resilience and determination as more than a dozen women share their experiences of overcoming obstacles such as racism, sexism, and disabilities.

The free public event, scheduled from 1-5 p.m., will feature NASA engineer Shelia Nash Stevenson, notable for being the first Black woman in Alabama to earn a Ph.D. in physics, as reported by WTVF. Stevenson, a recipient of NASA's Modern Figure Award, will join author Edie Hand, who will deliver the keynote. Hand, a figure of multifaceted success herself – a businesswoman, media personality, filmmaker, and mother – has notably contributed to literature with her book "Women of True Grit."

A free copy of Hand’s book, which profiles over 60 women who have navigated adversity to find success, will be given to the first 300 individuals in attendance. The stories within this volume offer a raw and authentic look into the lives of women who have battled and triumphed against formidable odds. "I am so excited that author Edie Hand agreed to partner with MTSU on this unforgettable afternoon featuring women from all walks of life who have overcome personal struggles to find success," stated Beverly Keel, dean of the College of Media and Entertainment, according to the DNJ.

Hand’s presence as a keynote speaker and Nash Stevenson’s notable participation solidify the conference’s standing as a pivotal moment in this year’s National Women’s History Month celebrations, as highlighted by MTSU News.
