Organized by Voices for a Safer Tennessee, the initiative seeks to unite over 13,000 people through a chain of connection and songs of solidarity.
"We're stronger together by holding one another up during a dark time," is the resonating message of the gathering as reported by NewsChannel 5. The human chain will span from Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt to Centennial Park, up Broadway, and onto the State Capitol. Meanwhile, musical guests and city's faith leaders will bring their voices together in a program at Musicians Corner in Centennial Park.
At the heart of the remembrance stands Covenant School, a place where faith has apparently been a guiding light through the depths of tragedy. According to Helenair, the school community has formed strong bonds from their collective anguish, further strengthened by the presence of adopted canine companions. Among those who have found solace in four-legged friends is the school’s chaplain, Matthew Sullivan, now a carer for Hank, a Rhodesian ridgeback.
Within these acts of unity and remembrance lie the haunting memories of the day that forever changed their lives. Sullivan remembers walking to safety with the students in human chain and one of them asking, “Where’s Evelyn?” “The days that followed are a blur anyway,” Sullivan told AP News. The painful memory lingers of realizing that Katherine Koonce, the Head of School, was ominously missing from the teachers’ text thread. An endless wait ensued at a nearby church, as parents were slowly reunited with their children amidst a disheartening confusion.
