A wave of crime including vehicle thefts, burglaries, and narcotics violations swept through Newark last week, according to a recent blotter report published by the Newark Police Department. Starting on March 4, officers from the department diligently responded to multiple incidents across the city, recovering stolen vehicles, arresting individuals on outstanding warrants, and investigating property loss from local residents.
The police activity kicked off early Monday morning when Officer S. Torres recovered a stolen vehicle on Joaquin Murieta Avenue at 8:00 AM. Later that night, the department noted another vehicle theft on Newpark Mall Road. The week continued with similar incidents, including several vehicle burglaries where thieves quickly gained entry, smashing windows, and seizing valuables such as electronics, tools, an office bag, and contents within a suitcase.
Arrests during the week were not uncommon, with Newark Police taking into custody various individuals on a range of offenses. One such instance detailed by the department featured a male arrested for evading a peace officer and outstanding court warrants after Officer Lara's pedestrian stop on Newark Boulevard. Another incident saw a 37-year-old man booked for driving under the influence following a collision at Cherry Street and Central Avenue.
In a blight of recurrent vehicle invasions, thieves persistently targeted parked cars, prompting officers to investigate. Officer Jackman discovered bags and tools missing after windows were shattered on Newpark Mall Road and Balentine Drive. Officer Kim evaluated a theft involving residential mail on Hafner Way and Ruschin Drive. Towards the weekend, Officer Williams responded to a vehicle burglary on Bettencourt Street, with tools reported stolen. Amid these events, narcotics violations were also prevalent, resulting in arrests and probation violations.
Residents can now readily access the arrest log for the past 30 days, getting a visual on recent arrestees through a public database introduced by the Newark Police. This database provides mug shots and basic information about the individuals committing crimes in the community, as allowable by law. The log's link was published as a part of the broader crime report on March 11, offering transparency and details into the local law enforcement's ongoing battle against crime.
