A Dorchester basketball game took a dangerous turn on Saturday when a man, now identified as Omar Stephenson, allegedly escalated from aggressive gameplay to physical assault and ultimately a knife-wielding chase. According to Boston Police Department reports, the 37-year-old local was detained on both assault and battery charges after the unsettling incident that peeled the serenity off an otherwise ordinary evening in the neighborhood.
The authorities were summoned to 56 Dunbar Avenue around 5:22 PM after receiving a distress call about an individual armed with a knife, upon arrival, they observed two people running from the scene, and immediately intervened to understand the situation and the victims reportedly told the officers they were chased by Stephenson, who had earlier joined them for basketball and then after being told to leave due to his aggressive behavior he allegedly placed one of them in a headlock and subsequently brandished a knife.
Quick on their feet, the officers canvassed the vicinity based on the description provided, they didn't have to look far before finding Stephenson still at the court, reportedly still in a state of agitation. Upon his arrest, a frisk revealed he was carrying a lengthy 12-inch hunting knife concealed in his coat, a potential disaster averted by the arresting officers' prompt response.
Stephenson now faces serious legal repercussions; he is being charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery with the arraignment set to unfold in Dorchester District Court, the charges reflect the gravity of a conflict that escalated past verbal altercations and now a community left to grapple with an episode of violence that shook the foundations of their weekend normalcy.
