Tragedy struck early Friday morning as a devastating fire swept through a Mesa mobile home park, claiming the life of one resident and laying waste to several homes. The inferno, which erupted around 2 a.m. near Center Street and McKellips Road, was visible from the Loop 202 Red Mountain freeway and quickly engulfed four homes while damaging others, according to Arizona's Family news.
Firefighters and police were pressed into action, evacuating residents as flames threatened to consume more of the tight-quartered mobile home park. Amidst their battle against the blaze, which was hindered by gas and electric utilities damaged by the flames, emergency crews discovered a deceased individual inside one of the trailers, as per details provided by Arizona's Family News. The Mesa Fire Department reported a roughly 30-minute effort to subdue the fire.
The aftermath revealed a scene of destruction with heavily damaged homes, one with a roof that had partially collapsed and was swathed in black smoke. Captured on video by Arizona's Family News drone, the degree of the devastation became clear in the harsh light of dawn. While the Red Cross has stepped in to assist displaced residents, the identity of the deceased has yet to be disclosed, and an investigation into the cause of the inferno remains ongoing.
In a statement obtained by 12News, Mesa police indicated they assisted with evacuations before the fire department took command of the incident. Tragically, the firefighters extinguished the flames in one of the homes, and the remains of a victim were located. The investigation to uncover further details is active, as officials seek insights into this calamitous event that has marred the community.
