A fatal blaze claimed the life of one person and a dog at a Chicopee, Massachusetts home on Saturday, local authorities report. The incident occurred in a three-family residence on Southwick Street, where firefighters dispatched at approximately 9:30 a.m. came upon a harrowing scene after a passerby spotted smoke and sounded the alarm, as per NBC Boston.
The casualty, identified only as an adult, was located inside the building on the first floor. A dog also fell victim to the blaze, whereas, firefighters managed to save a cat from the inferno. According to Fire Chief Daniel P. Stamborski, “Our hearts go out to the family after this tragedy,” in a statement obtained by Boston 25 News. “It’s a sad day for them and our community.” Not a soul else was present at the time of the fire.
Determining the deceased's exact cause of death has been entrusted to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The investigation into the fire's cause is ongoing, though initial findings suggest no foul play, officials said.
Multiple agencies, including the Chicopee Fire and Police Departments, Massachusetts State Police, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Hampden County District Attorney's Office, have all converged on the investigation.
