The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is set to give the green light again to the Oregon Clean Vehicle Rebate Program starting April 3, as of today's statement. But don't dally if you're looking to score a deal on your next ride; with limited funds in the coffer and a high demand for the rebates, the scheme is expected to run dry by June 4, 2024. To be eligible for the rebate, your eco-friendly wheels need to be bought or leased during the specified time window - too early or too late, and you'll be out of luck.
After reopening, green-thumbed Oregonians have to quickly act to apply for their rebates; they've only got a six-month window from their purchase or lease date to snatch up the offer. The actual cash left in the tank for these rebates can be tracked online, with the DEQ warning that they may have to quickly put approved applicants on hold if funds get sucked dry earlier than anticipated. These stalled applications would have to wait to get their money until the state revitalizes the fund in spring 2025.
Calling the move critical to the state's climate campaign, Ali Mirzakhalili, DEQ Air Quality Division Administrator, has previously stressed the importance of shifting Oregon drivers to electric vehicles for cleaner air and better health. "Transitioning Oregon drivers to electric vehicles is a crucial part of the state’s overall climate plan. Electric vehicles reduce air pollution and help improve air quality and public health," said Mirzakhalili in a statement. As per the program, it aims to ease up the financial pinch, especially for low- and moderate-income households ready to go electric.
Last year a similar cash crunch hit the program leading to a suspension when the number of hands reaching out for rebates surpassed what the pot could support. DEQ had to shunt the remaining approved applicants onto a waiting list, which they are managing to burn through as we speak. Now with the rebate program ready to get back on its feet, DEQ hopes to better manage the influx of applications this year.
