In a progressive move to combat climate change, Oregon stepped into the spotlight this week, hosting the final workshop of the Western Governors' Association's (WGA) ambitious "Decarbonizing the West Initiative," Governor Tina Kotek took the stage Monday to emphasize the critical role of the state's natural and working lands in fostering resilient communities and advancing Oregon's climate objectives.
Addressing attendees, Kotek highlighted the dual economic and environmental benefits these lands offer to rural and Tribal communities and the pressing need for strategic solutions in face of climate change’s rapid transformations "Our natural and working lands are a cornerstone of our rural and Tribal economies, and an integral part of building healthy, climate-resilient communities," she said in a statement obtained by the State of Oregon Newsroom, "They are also a powerful resource to help meet our state’s ambitious climate goals, sequester carbon, and respond to a future of increasing uncertainty." Kotek's administration, she stated, is ready to tackle the most daunting challenges head-on, from housing to climate change.
The WGA initiative, chaired by Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon, explores cutting-edge decarbonization strategies such as carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, direct air capture (DAC), and natural sequestration, setting the stage for western states to lead in reducing the environmental impact of carbon emissions.
As the initiative wraps up, a comprehensive report is expected by the summer of 2024, promising to shed light on practical measures and technological innovations that could place western states in the vanguard of environmental stewardship, the initiative scrutinizes a range of solutions to curb carbon footprints and positions the region as a trendsetter in combating the effects of greenhouse gases.
