In a decisive move to tackle the state's growing housing affordability crisis, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek commended the legislature for passing a monumental housing package. The measures, part of an ambitious plan to stabilize and increase housing production, were met with broad approval as reported by the State of Oregon.
Following the passing of Senate Bill 1537 and Senate Bill 1530, Governor Kotek highlighted the critical importance of the legislation, "After hearing this concern directly from Oregonians from across our state last year, I knew we had to make major progress on our housing crisis during this year’s legislative session." She added, crediting the Oregon legislature, "I want to thank legislators for meeting the urgency of this moment and providing much-needed funding that will boost housing production throughout the state."
The House of Representatives passed the bills with considerable support, casting a 48-8 vote for SB 1537 and a 51-6 vote for SB 1530. Both bills had already cleared the Senate the previous week. The funding for the Emergency Housing Stabilization and Production Package, which totals $376 million, includes additional projects via HB 4134, which awaits a vote in the House and subsequent Senate approval, according to the State of Oregon.
Governor Kotek, outlining the scope of the housing package, remarked on its holistic approach, "These bills offer a menu of tools that will provide the support needed to ease our housing crisis and help all our communities thrive." The governor remained cautious, signaling that the legislative wins, while significant, were only part of a larger battle to end housing insecurity, "But this is not the finish line. We have more work ahead to solve our housing and homelessness crises – and I will keep pushing for more because the need is so great. Oregonians are counting on us to deliver."
