The St. Patrick’s Day weekend crackdown on drunk and reckless drivers in Portland turned up the heat, with a swarm of traffic stops and a bushel of citations. The Portland Police Bureau joined forces with an alliance of state, county, and local law enforcement agencies to spearhead a high-visibility DUII enforcement mission. With the needle moving past 1,600 stops, the concerted effort put a dent in holiday hooliganism.
With sirens blaring and lights flashing, the determined fleet pulled over hundreds of motorists in a bid to sober up the streets. Speaking on the dragnet's success, "We appreciate our law enforcement partners who were involved in this mission," said Chief Bob Day in a statement. Taking into account that these same drivers can cross into different jurisdictions, he pointed out the shared impact of their misdeeds on neighboring cities—it's a problem without borders.
The operation, spanning three days, dished out 950 citations in total, sending a clear message that law enforcers were not just hunting for clovers. Broken down by day, the enforcement efforts were relentless. On Friday alone, a blitz of 746 traffic stops were made, issuing 419 citations and ending with 30 arrests. Speed demons were flagged down in 404 instances, while 17 others were snagged for impaired driving and 53 for distracted driving.
Come Saturday, the streak continued with 546 stops, resulting in 323 citations and 26 arrests—the officers were as busy as bees. Speeding, once again, topped the list of offenses, leading to 254 stops, complemented by 17 incidents of impaired driving and 42 of distracted driving. Sunday wrapped up the weekend with 373 stops; however, it saw 22 arrests, with the officers arresting 224 speeders and reining in 16 impaired drivers, alongside 13 distracted road users.
According to Chief Day, whose praise of the operation was evident, this DUII enforcement mission "undoubtedly saved lives this weekend," underscoring its importance. These figures are not just digits but represent possible calamities averted, and potential losses mitigated. And if the results are anything to go by, Portland streets were a tad safer during a holiday known for its revelry, but too often marred by reckless abandon.
