Chaos erupted at Sawgrass Mills Mall on Tuesday as a pair of bandits busted into Neiman Marcus, performed a smash-and-grab heist, and blasted employees with pepper spray. The brazen daylight robbery left workers shaken and a store shuttered while police raced to find the culprits.
These robbers, who remain at large, wasted no time to boldly smash a display case and snatch up purses valued at around $12,000. They pepper-sprayed two employees in their escape, initiating a hunt by Sunrise Police. The getaway vehicle, described only as a white van, sped off with the suspects and the stolen goods, as reported by Local 10 News.
No serious injuries were thankfully reported after the robbery, though those exposed to pepper spray certainly suffered. According to WSVN, the Sunrise Fire Department responded posthaste to treat the affected employee. The store, meanwhile, was closed for the day, its security gates drawn shut while the investigation proceeded.
The audacious theft and assault unfolded quickly, leaving employees and shoppers in a cloud of confusion and alarm. "An alarm went off. People coming out coughing, saying there is like a weird smell, and then later on a lady said, 'You're right. That was mace'," Adi Alic, a security guard, told WSVN. The impact on bystanders evident as a visiting family from Kentucky found their favorite store access barred.
Details from witnesses and surveillance footage are being sifted through by local authorities. Descriptions of the suspects, however, remain vague. Anyone with knowledge about the incident is urged to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS, with assurances of anonymity and a possible reward. As the investigation continues to unfurl, the community remains on edge awaiting justice and resolution to an attack that left a normal shopping day violently disrupted.
