In Philadelphia, a city already bursting with historical firsts, three more unique additions were celebrated on Leap Day at Jefferson Health's hospitals, FOX29 reports. The first of the trio, Siyon Davilla-Brown, arrived at 12:56 a.m. at Jefferson Einstein Hospital. Meanwhile, across the country, a separate leap year phenomenon has been charmingly unfolding over the years, with one family, in particular, boasting not one but three children born on consecutive February 29ths, a story first told by Business Insider.
The rarity of leap day birthdays, occurring once every four years to balance our calendars with Earth's orbit, has tied the Estes family, hailing from parts unknown, in an extraordinary bond. Xavier, Remington, and Jade share not only the same birthday but the unique distinction of all being born on separate leap days as their Norwegian predecessors, the Henriksons, recorded by the Guinness World Records. The Estes mother, Louise, mentioned to Business Insider with a hint of jest, "We didn't bother to apply because it's all about coming first," nevertheless, the children "think it's pretty cool," and the family takes advantage of the quadrennial event for an extra special celebration.
Despite not having leap day birthdays themselves, the other Estes siblings don't feel excluded from the festivities; on the contrary, according to WNCT, sibling Alexander quipped, "Every four years, I get to eat three times the amount of cake in one year." The family dynamics suggest that whether leaplings or not, the quirky birthday has forged a familial closeness and a reason for grand celebrations every four years.
Louise Estes, embracing the peculiarity of her family's leap year circumstance, insists on a message of unconditional love for her children, telling WNCT, "I always try and let them know that, ‘I love you because you’re mine,'" highlighting the permanence of a mother's love in the face of temporal oddities. While Philadelphia's newest leaplings ventured home to join siblings and begin life's journey, the Estes children, each experiencing a true once-every-four-year birthday, continue to write their chapter in a family's tale of extraordinary coincidence or perhaps, a peculiar twist of fate.
