Heading into a weekend full of disruptions, Phoenix drivers are advised to brace for significant closures, especially on the eastbound Interstate 10, due to pavement improvement work. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has alerted the public about these closures taking place from Friday night, March 29, until the early hours of Monday, April 1.
According to ADOT's announcement, the eastbound I-10 will be totally inaccessible between Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) and I-17 (Stack Interchange), starting at 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. The closures extend to the northbound Loop 202 ramps to eastbound I-10, and all eastbound I-10 on-ramps at 79th, 75th, and 67th avenues. Detours have been established, with ADOT recommending the southbound/eastbound Loop 202 to reconnect with I-10 near Chandler Boulevard in Ahwatukee. Alternatively, local routes such as McDowell and Thomas roads, or Van Buren Street and Buckeye Road could serve as detours to reach I-17.
Another closure to note is at 32nd Street, which will be closed in both directions between I-10 and Elwood Street from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for ramp construction work. The east- and westbound I-10 off-ramps and westbound on-ramp at 32nd Street will also be closed, though northbound 32nd Street will remain open between Broadway Road and the eastbound I-10 on-ramp. Drivers are advised to consider alternative routes, including the westbound I-10 off-ramps at 40th or 24th streets and the eastbound off-ramp at 40th Street, allowing extra travel time is also recommended.
For more detailed travel and route information, commuters can visit ADOT's advisory notice for the latest updates. It's important to note that all scheduled work is dependent on the weather, and could be subject to changes. ADOT oversees the planning and construction of new freeways, additional lanes, and other improvements in Phoenix as part of the Regional Transportation Plan funded, in part, by the voter-approved Proposition 400 sales tax.
Real-time highway conditions can be tracked via ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the az511 app or by calling 511, to aid in making informed travel decisions throughout the weekend.
