The vibrant and free Rainbows Festival is gearing up to quickly sprinkle its colors over Phoenix's Heritage Square Park this weekend, with an expected attendance of more than 30,000 people across the two-day event. The festival, a staple in the LGBTQ community for over 20 years, is heralded as a family and pet-friendly occasion for everyone to enjoy, according to Jeremy Helfgot of Phoenix Pride in an interview with ABC15.
With its theme "Unapologetically Me," the festival is committed to inclusivity and will showcase over 150 vendors, two live entertainment stages featuring a range of acts from DJs to drag queens, and a block party environment. This year’s headliners include British vocalist Luciana and the legendary founder of Wigstock, Lady Bunny, both set to perform on the main stage, as detailed in a Phoenix New Times guide.
Attendance is open to the all-ages public and Helfgot emphasizes the welcoming nature of the festival, stating, "Anyone who wants to come and have fun and be positive is going to be welcomed to join us,” as told to ABC15. However, the festival maintains a firm stance against any disruptive behavior, with a clear policy of removing those who may start trouble, as Helfgot mentioned in a previous article.
Transportation to the festival is ideally managed via Valley Metro Rail with a minimal fare, but for those driving, parking structures nearby offer day rates. According to Phoenix New Times, street parking is another option, although space is expected to be limited given the event’s popularity. In terms of festival entry, entrances can be found along Seventh and Adams streets, with several others around the area.
As for the fun, Rainbows Festival provides a hearty lineup of entertainment and amenities. Beyond the headlining acts, local talent will grace the stages with performances ranging from rock covers to pageant showcases. Foodies will be delighted by over a dozen food vendors serving up an array of eats, and multiple beverage stations will make sure nobody goes thirsty. A detail not to be overlooked, the festival allows attendees to bring their furry friends provided they remain leashed throughout the affair.
While the festival is a celebration of joy and unity, certain rules apply. Prohibited items notably include weapons, hazardous substances, outside alcohol, and illegal drugs, ensuring safety and enjoyment for all, as outlined by both ABC15 and the Phoenix New Times. And for the night owls, after-parties at both Walter Studios and Charlie's Phoenix will keep the festivities going well into the night.
