Amid the echoes of yet another Detroit Pistons loss, the team's General Manager, Troy Weaver, found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. During the Pistons' 142-124 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, Weaver got into a profanity-laden spat with a heckler that resulted in the fan being shown the exit from Little Caesars Arena. Video evidence of the incident was captured and rapidly spread across social media platforms.
The verbal altercation took a turn when Weaver appeared to lose his cool with the fan, who was sporting a Detroit Red Wings jacket, with the GM reported by witnesses, including season-ticket holder Jeffrey Calloway, to have said "You're lucky I don't beat your a**," according to an interview with MLive. This exchange came on the heels of an earlier incident the same night when Weaver nonchalantly dismissed the fan's initial taunts.
The unruly critic was escorted from his seat by security following Weaver's pointed response. According to a source briefed on the incident, the fan had provoked Weaver not once, but twice, as reported by The Detroit News. The Pistons, under Weaver's guidance, have had a challenging run, marked by a record-breaking streak of 28 consecutive losses this season and carrying the league's worst record tied with Washington.
Weaver, who took the GM mantle of the Pistons, has seen the team amass a 70-229 record during his tenure of over three seasons, effectively inviting criticism and frustration from the Detroit faithful. The NBA Fan Code of Conduct sternly warns against inappropriate behavior, clocking fans up for potential penalties, including ejections and bans, as reflected in statements obtained by NBA.com. Following this fracas, the Pistons are gearing up to face Charlotte on Monday night.
