Police are on the hunt for a gunman who allegedly took aim at victims in a brazen early morning shooting in Northeast D.C., authorities said. The suspect reportedly confronted individuals Tuesday in the 1300 block of Okie Street NE, where an altercation turned violent.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department's Fifth District, the event took place at around 3:54 a.m. The assailant is said to have brandished a handgun, assaulted one person and opened fire on them. Luckily, the bullets failed to hit any of the victims before the suspect managed to quickly flee the area. The tense moments unfolded on Okie Street as described in a statement from the MPD.
Investigators are actively working to track down the suspect, whose identity remains a mystery. The attack occurred in a largely industrial area, lined with warehouses and businesses, leaving the authorities to scrounge for leads. Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward, while the community reels from the shock of the violence that erupted without warning.
While the motive behind the attack remains under investigation, the police are asking the public's help to firmly identify and locate the individual responsible. "The suspect approached the victims... assaulted one of the victims with a handgun and then shot at the victims, with no rounds taking effect," detailed the official MPD press release. This daylight attack serves as a harsh reminder of the daily threats that can emerge unexpectedly in the city's streets.
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting as of yet, but the Fifth District detectives remain on the case. They are combing through nearby security footage and canvassing the neighborhood to gather additional evidence.
