Port San Antonio, once a secluded military base, is evolving into a thriving commercial hub, aiming to bolster the Southside community with a slew of proposed developments. This transformation is a vision that caters to both the workforce within the Port and the surrounding neighborhoods, which anticipate tangible benefits from the area's growth.
According to a San Antonio Report article, Jesus Rendon, a local who moved back to work at the Port, along with Al Rocha, the neighborhood association board leader, are witnessing a gradual resurgence in the area, buoyed by the Port's development plans. Despite the former military base's past reticence, the community is now seeing long-awaited positive activity that promises improved quality of life and stronger connections to the broader San Antonio.
As Jim Perschbach, president and CEO of Port San Antonio, outlines the ambitions for the site, it's clear that change is on the horizon.“Over the coming seven to 10 years, we plan on adding 12,000 to 18,000 jobs for the campus,” Perschbach told the San Antonio City Council's Economic and Workforce Development Committee, as reported by the San Antonio Report. Crucial to this expansion is the development of complementary amenities, including a highly modern office tower, hotels, and a potential daycare center that would accommodate the burgeoning workforce and residents alike.
The proposed child care center is especially noteworthy, poised to serve Port workers, military personnel, and the general public. Despite the existence of a military-operated center at the Port, the demand for additional childcare spaces looms large. “What we’re trying to figure out right now is finding a sweet spot in terms of scalability, size, location, and requirements that allows us to have a really top-quality child development center without the prices becoming so rapacious that it limits big segments of the population out,” Perschbach told the San Antonio Report,
However, the ambitions of Port SA extend beyond mere economic benefits to the community. A focal point of the efforts, as detailed in the San Antonio Report, lies in the improvement of infrastructure—upgrades to roads and better community access are prominent items on Port officials' wish list.
