Portland's on the map again for its push to effectively curb violence, marking its place among the nation's leaders in violence prevention. For the second consecutive year, the City of Roses has made it to the top 10 cities for community-based violence intervention programs. The city's score on the Community Violence Prevention Index jumped from 39 out of 100 in 2022 to a whopping 77 in 2023, leaving the average city score of 32 in the dust.
These numbers are no small feat. They come as real evidence that intensive interventions can truly begin to heal deeply wounded communities. According to the City of Portland official website, this year's score reflects hard-earned advancements in immediate intervention, risk factor reduction, and the establishment of dedicated offices for violence prevention.
"I’m impressed by, and grateful for, the hard work of the Community Safety Division, the Ceasefire team, the Office of Violence Prevention, and the many partners these teams work with every day to make Portland safer for everyone," Mayor Ted Wheeler told City Of Portland. He noted the dedicated efforts made to enrich the lives of Portlanders and prevent harm before it scorches their streets.
This commendable jump in the prevention index, coupled with a significant 21% reduction in gun homicides from 2022 to 2023, shows that their strategy is paying off. Shank-strong support for the Office of Violence Prevention's Intensive Case Management and Street Level Outreach programs, alongside the work of Portland Ceasefire, offers tangible proof of a safer tomorrow. Community Safety Division Transition Director Mike Myers acknowledged the progress but was quick to assert, "We’re optimistic our efforts are making real, tangible changes to driving down gun violence, but we know the work is far from over."
Last month, during a work session for City Council, Mayor Ted Wheeler's Director for Community Safety Stephanie Howard, alongside other key officials, laid out Portland’s strategy for reducing gun violence in detail. Metrics and success stories painted a hopeful picture while still stressing the importance of sustained effort and future planning.
With this rank and the results to show, Portland's setting a clear example that investment in violence prevention not only saves lives but also strengthens communities at their core, potentially inspiring other cities to follow suit.
