Firefighters in Southeast Portland had their hands full as they tackled not one, but two house fires late Monday night, authorities reported. Portland Fire & Rescue first rushed to a fire in the Division/Clinton neighborhood just after 11 p.m. where flames had taken hold of a residential shed, before greedily latching onto the two-and-a-half-story house, as reported by KATU. Despite the intensity, the fire crews managed to snuff out the blaze within a mere 30 minutes.
The situation escalated when, during the first fire's fury, a call came in for another fire about 20 blocks to the east in the Richmond neighborhood. With the initial responders engaged, additional firefighters had to be summoned from farther afield, a move that KOIN said slowed their response. This secondary blaze was sighted on the second story of a home, but firefighters managed quick work here too, extinguishing this second threat in under 10 minutes.
According to Portland Fire & Rescue, the Division/Clinton fire began outside in a shed and quickly spread to the main house. "There was heavy fire on the backside of the house, which then extended into the attic," the agency noted. Despite what could have been a rapid and, destructive spread, the fire department's swift and methodical action quelled the flames swiftly.
The back-to-back nature of the fires tested the mettle of Portland's first responders, showcasing their capability to handle multiple emergencies simultaneously. While the first fire's origin remains under investigation, no injuries were reported in either incident. The rapid response and effectiveness of the firefighting crews prevented what could have been a more calamitous outcome, for the structures involved, and perhaps for the community at large.
