Despite, the market’s roots can be traced back to 1974, the brainchild of artists Sheri Teasdale and Andrea Scharf who aimed to transplant the intimate shopper's experience of an Eugene market to the heart of Portland. The event now occupies a prominent thread in the fabric of Portland's community, artists said.
As the anniversary festivities unfurl, the Portland Saturday Market is not just a weekend destination but a beacon of consistency in the city. “Spirit’s the same though, everybody has to make what they sell. Great group of people, super fun, interactive shopping experience unlike a mall,” vendor Sue Kenney explained, as KPTV reported. She went on to assert that the market contributes positively to downtown Portland, drawing an upbeat crowd that includes a sizable number of international visitors.
Market enthusiasts like shopper Alex Trombley, who battled the chilly elements to attend, echo the sentiments of vendors.
