The Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, in conjunction with partners from across the city, is drafting an ambitious five-year action plan designed to boost housing development in the City of Roses. The Housing Production Strategy (HPS) framework, released just yesterday, is a comprehensive roadmap to tackle the city's housing crisis head-on.
With an unrelenting focus on creating more affordable and equitable housing options, the plan seeks to fully engage the community at all income levels. "These strategies will help meet the community’s current and future housing needs, especially for more equitable and affordable options for a wider range of households and their incomes, needs, and preferences," says a statement released by the Bureau, inviting public commentary on the proposed initiatives.
The Housing Production Strategy is open to laying down targeted goals, categorized into eight key initiatives. These range from promoting affordable housing for those earning 0-80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) to advocating for better housing policies at the state and federal levels. Other focal points include increasing homeownership rates, providing more access to opportunities, and ensuring housing stability for current and future residents.
Several strategies are also aimed at streamlining development processes to lessen the hurdles for builders. Others intend to construct homes better suited for the aging population and individuals with disabilities. Moreover, the plan doesn't overlook environmental concerns, including promoting climate-friendly and healthy homes among its priorities.
Citizens of Portland are now asked to lend their voices to this critical discussion, with the Bureau encouraging input on the discussion draft of the Housing Production Strategies Action Plan. Through public engagement and collaboration, the city hopes to pave the way towards a more inclusive, sustainable housing future.
