PortMiami is setting sail on a new venture aimed at boosting the local workforce in the nautical sphere. The initiative falls under the banner of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's Future Ready Plan and includes a series of apprenticeship programs to train individuals in technical maritime roles. This program stands as a collaboration between PortMiami, Seaboard Marine, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Office of Postsecondary Career and Technical Education.

In a push to fill the employment gaps and drive the local economy, Mayor Levine Cava emphasized, "This collaborative public-private partnership ensures that all residents have access to training, and good-paying jobs, which will also help fill employment gaps in the maritime industry." The Future Ready Plan, according to the Mayor, lays the groundwork for developing tomorrow's economy today. These new educational avenues extend to three paid apprenticeship programs aimed at creating skilled workers for roles as diesel systems technicians, diesel off-road maintenance technicians, and commercial refrigeration technicians.

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools is equally buoyant about the initiative. "We at Miami-Dade County Public Schools are thrilled to partner with PortMiami and Seaboard Marine on this pioneering initiative. These apprenticeship programs prepare our students with the skills necessary to thrive in the maritime industry," Dr. Jose L. Dotres, Superintendent, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, told Miami-Dade County.

Bruce Brecheisen, Executive Vice President of Seaboard Marine, communicated the strategic significance of cultivating a qualified labor force, noting, "As a trade leader in ocean transportation and logistics, it’s critical that we train, place, and retain a strong labor force at PortMiami." He further stated, "Through this initiative, we are proud to shape the next generation of highly skilled professionals who will drive our industry’s continued growth, and success." In efforts to simplify the job hunt for prospective maritime employees, the County launched a new website – www.Workforce.Miami. Seaboard Marine has already dipped its toes into these digital waters by posting job openings on the platform.

The importance of PortMiami to the local region cannot be overstated. Recognized globally as the Cruise Capital of the World and a major commerce hub, the port pours an estimated $43 billion annually into Miami-Dade County and provides over 334,500 jobs. The implications of this new workforce program could further enhance the port's pivotal role in the region's economic dynamics.
