In an act of political defiance, protestors blocked streets in Northwest D.C. near the Capitol, in a bid to disrupt President Joe Biden's journey to deliver his State of the Union address. As tensions over the handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict simmer, the protestors, rallied by pro-Palestinian sentiment, gathered hours prior to the President's scheduled speech, creating a human barricade along the motorcade's anticipated route, according to DC News Now.
These demonstrations were a tangible manifestation of the schism within Biden's own political party, with progressive Democrats becoming increasingly vocal in their criticism of his approach to the crisis in Gaza. As Axios reports, they have been insisting that the President work harder to secure not just a temporary, but an enduring ceasefire in the region, and address the humanitarian concerns that continue to mount.
About 100 demonstrators made their presence distinctly known at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and 3rd Street, many donned in face masks, as they hoisted accusative signs towards the evening sky. One such sign declared, "Biden’s legacy is genocide," according to a scene captured by FOX News. Despite the charged atmosphere, police have stated that no arrests had been made in connection with the protest, barring a single charge of reckless driving.
As the grievances concerning civilian casualties in Gaza echo through the streets of Washington, D.C., these protests underline the growing dissatisfaction within segments of Biden's support base. Although the White House has yet to issue a statement in response to the developments, the intensity of the moment cannot be understated as the President prepared to address Congress and the nation at 9 p.m. ET time.
