A repeat offender from the District has been slapped with a 32-month prison sentence for felony second-degree theft after a string of package thefts. Daniel Greene, 42, an accused habitual thief, was handed down the sentence to be followed by a stint of supervised release for three years.

Greene, whose rap sheet includes nine prior theft convictions, pleaded guilty on January 5, 2024, to two counts of lifting packages from Northeast Washington doorsteps in September last year. Superior Court Judge Erik Christian decided Monday, each count was worth 16 months behind bars, to run back-to-back, as the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.

With a criminal history seasoned with thefts, Greene was a prime candidate for escalated penalties under the District of Columbia law – facing, at minimum, a one-year prison term for his recent capers.

The Office of U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, and MPD Chief Pamela Smith, who announced the sentencing, commended the Metropolitan Police Department for their investigative efforts. Assistant U.S. Attorney Hannah Skopicki was singled out for her role, in bringing Greene's latest misdeeds to justice.
