
An early morning eruption of road rage on I-80/94 in Northwest Indiana resulted in a tragic conclusion when a 55-year-old man was fatally shot, authorities said. Indiana State Police received a distress call around the 4 a.m. hour concerning the incident which shortly thereafter involved a solo-vehicle crash that took place westbound near Ripley Street; according to WGN-TV.
The crisis unfolded when troopers found the vehicle and its driver, later identified by the Lake County Coroner as Mark Brant of Chesterton, Indiana, who had succumbed to a gunshot wound, officials pieced together the story of the road rage incident turning deadly with the victim being pronounced dead at the scene, Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield told reporters, including NBC Chicago.
Amidst the ensuing investigation, the alleged shooter, who called in to report the road rage skirmish, stayed approximately two miles away from where the events reached their fatal climax, by order of the officers; upon their arrival, he was apprehended, pending further inquiry into the morning's grim happenings, as stated by authorities.
The roadway carnage forced a shutdown of all westbound lanes near the vicinity of Ripley Street which created a significant interruption for the morning commuters traffic was rerouted, the inconvenience lasted several hours until officials reopened the lanes around 8 a.m., Sgt. Fifield confirmed in an update that was shared with the public.
