A standoff lasting three hours ended in Royal Oak with a 46-year-old man under arrest, authorities reported. The ordeal began Monday evening when the Royal Oak Police Department was summoned to Whitcomb Avenue following reports of an alleged assault at a local residence. According to The Detroit News, the man, who showed signs of a mental health crisis, barricaded himself inside his home along with his wife and two children after police arrived.
The situation escalated quickly, with law enforcement learning that the suspect was not only in possession of long guns but also donned a bulletproof vest. Through continued efforts to safely resolve the situation, vital support was provided by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office and a local SWAT team. Officers tried to talk the man into surrendering, and after several failed attempts, used an electric stun gun to bring him into custody. During the standoff, residents were advised to remain within their homes as police secured the area.
