In a classic case of the prodigal son making his return, C.J. Gardner-Johnson has struck a deal to go back to the Philadelphia Eagles after a fleeting tenure with the Detroit Lions. The safety flew the coop for a $33 million three-year contract, with the Eagles hoping his return can fortify a secondary that's seen recent changes, particularly with the release of slot corner Avonte Maddox.
Despite Gardner-Johnson's 2023 season being marred by a pectoral tear in week 2, the Eagles are banking on his proven track record, which includes leading the league with six interceptions in their 2022 Super Bowl campaign, The Detroit News reported. His injury kept him out most of the season but, he asserted his recovery dedication by returning for the playoffs, where he tacked on an additional interception and 12 tackles across three games.
It seems the Eagles couldn't resist rekindling the flame with Gardner-Johnson, "Flying home," he posted on X following news of the deal, as reported by CBS Philadelphia. His versatile defensive skill set is a plus for Philly, particularly after their free agency revamp which includes new contracts with DeVante Parker and Saquon Barkley.
Meanwhile, the Lions look to move forward with a younger duo at safety, with Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu, who combined for six interceptions last season, "The Lions are counting on Joseph and Melifonwu to be their starting safeties in 2024," the Detroit Free Press mentioned. Detroit's secondary also got a boost with the acquisition of Carlton Davis in a trade and signing cornerback Amik Robertson.
After shuffling between teams, including a desirable stint with the New Orleans Saints and an earlier phase with the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson's recent contract roulette has culminated in an Eagles encore. Last summer, he had labelled Philly fans as "[expletive] obnoxious" during a Twitch livestream after his exit to Detroit, but it seems all is forgiven in the City of Brotherly Love.
