A blaze on the west side of town turned dangerous for one city firefighter who was injured during a structure fire yesterday. Units of the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) were dispatched to the 5500 block of West Commerce Street around 12:45 p.m., where the flames were engaged subsequently. According to KENS 5, the complex structure served dual purposes, housing a business at the back and residential quarters upfront.
Heightening the stakes, a multitude of vehicles were under a metal canopy, which enveloped the heat and compounded the danger amidst plentiful fuel. Local bystanders described hearing explosions, later confirmed by SAFD as propane and torch welding tanks bursting in the inferno's rage. While some individuals were inside when the fire erupted, they managed to escape unscathed. In contrast, working to tame the voracious flames, a firefighter, who is currently unnamed, sustained an injury whose condition was evaluated and is expected to recover.
The effort to extinguish the fire spanned an intense 30 to 40 minutes. As firefighters valiantly worked to control the situation, the cause of the fire still remains a matter of speculation and is under thorough investigation.
Information on the firefighter's injury or the extent of damage to the structure has not been disclosed in detail. Despite the turmoil, the SAFD's quick response ensured no civilian injuries, a testament to the department's dedication to public safety. The community now looks on as authorities piece together the events leading up to the blaze, hoping for answers and swift recovery for the brave firefighter injured on duty.
