The San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has soared to new heights, declaring 2023 as the busiest year in its 80-year history with a record 10,676,570 passengers breezing through its terminals, a significant increase over the previous high in 2019, according to an announcement made by the San Antonio Airport System (SAAS). Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports for SAAS, expressed his elation, saying, "We are on cloud nine,” in a statement obtained by SAAS News Releases. The airport's success is due in part to the expansion of routes both domestically and internationally, including the inaugural nonstop flights to Europe slated for May on Condor Airlines.

Beyond the overall yearly increase, SAT smashed monthly records since May 2023, with December being noteworthy as passenger numbers peaked at 968,469 the busiest in recorded history for the month. Brian Pratte, Chief Air Service Officer at SAAS, referred to the launch of several new routes and expansions such as Spirit Airlines' added nonstop service to cities like Baltimore and Los Angeles, along with Viva Aerobus opening gates to Querétaro as recently as last month. With eyes set on the horizon, 2024 already boasts a promising slate of new routes, including American Airlines' daily nonstop service to Philadelphia commencing on June 5, and Southwest Airlines' new pathway to Burbank starting June 4.

In the wake of this unparalleled growth, San Antonio International Airport also pulled back the curtain on a new branding initiative, celebrating the record-setting year and their vision for the future. Jesus Saenz, presided over the brand reveal, stating, "We are a hub where cultures converge and journeys begin. It is my honor to unveil a significant milestone in our airports history. The launch of our new brand." This information was detailed by KENS 5. The branding overhaul aligns with their plans to erect a new terminal featuring up to 17 additional international gates by 2028.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg was present during the announcement and did not hold back his enthusiasm for SAT's budding prospects. "San Antonio International Airport is in the midst of a very historic time, this is our time," he relayed. Adding to the lofty achievements, the airport was named 2023 Business of the Year by the San Antonio Business Journal and secured the number two spot for Mid-Sized Community Airport nationally by the Wall Street Journal. With such a trajectory, the sky is seemingly the only boundary for San Antonio International Airport as it propels toward strategic growth and amplified connectivity for the region.
