An 18-year-old woman was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the leg outside a motel just south of downtown San Antonio in the middle of the night, when an argument between two men she was hanging out with suddenly turned violent. Police say one of the men pulled out a firearm and fired toward the other, and the woman was struck once in the crossfire.
The shooting happened around 1:37 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of Roosevelt Avenue, according to WOAI. The outlet reports the woman was transported to a local hospital after being struck once in the leg, and that the whereabouts and detention status of the suspects remains unclear. San Antonio police were contacted for more information, per the same report. KENS 5 identified the location as the Sunset Inn motel, reporting that the argument broke out between the two men the woman was with before one of them opened fire.
A Motel With a Long History of Trouble
The Sunset Inn at 1100 Roosevelt Avenue isn't new to scrutiny from city officials. Back in October 2010, the City of San Antonio filed a lawsuit against three Roosevelt Avenue properties, including the Sunset Inn, seeking court injunctions to curtail recurring narcotics and crime issues at the sites, according to a report at the time from MySA. San Antonio Fire Department incident logs from August 2021 also show emergency crews responding to a reported structure fire at the same address.
If investigators identify and arrest the shooter, the case would likely be prosecuted under Texas Penal Code § 22.02, which classifies discharging a firearm at another person during a dispute as Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. That's a second-degree felony carrying a possible sentence of 2 to 20 years in prison and fines up to $10,000, according to FindLaw.
Roosevelt Avenue's Recent String of Violence
This isn't the first time gunfire has erupted along this stretch of San Antonio's South Side. In September 2024, a man was hospitalized after being shot in the leg while pumping gas at a station nearby, with the shooter's vehicle fleeing onto Roosevelt Avenue, KSAT reported at the time. And in a case Hoodline covered, murder charges dropped over insufficient evidence following an August 2024 fatal dispute and self-defense shooting in a parking lot near Roosevelt Avenue and Southeast Military Drive.
The corridor has also seen deadly traffic incidents in recent weeks. Hoodline reported on a suspected intoxicated driver who died in a wrong-way crash near Loop 410 and Roosevelt Avenue in early August.
Citywide Crime Trends Offer a Mixed Picture
Zoom out, and San Antonio's overall violence numbers have been trending downward for years. San Antonio recorded 105 homicides in 2025, marking a third consecutive annual drop from 127 in 2024 and 165 in 2023, per KSAT. An evaluation by University of Texas at San Antonio criminologists found violent street crime dropped 21.1% and aggravated assaults declined 19.8% citywide in 2025 under the police department's Violent Crime Reduction Plan, according to the San Antonio Report.
Still, the picture for 2026 isn't uniformly rosy. Official San Antonio Police Department NIBRS data shows recorded crimes against persons reached 18,684 from January through July 2026, compared to 18,347 during the same seven-month stretch in 2025 — a modest increase even as longer-term trends point downward.
For now, key questions about Saturday's shooting remain open. It's not clear whether police have identified or detained the man who allegedly fired the shots, whether a firearm was recovered at the scene, or whether the 18-year-old woman was an unintended bystander caught in gunfire meant for someone else.
