A grisly tale of murder and arson has emerged from San Antonio's west side as Baltazar Castaneda faces charges for the brutal killing of his neighbor Richard Amesquita, 58, followed by torching the victim's home, law enforcement officials said.
Disturbing details have surfaced after fire officials responded to an emergency on February 27 in the 800 block of Northwest 20th Street. Initially believing Amesquita, whose body was found inside the charred residence, was a victim of his smoking habits, officials were prompted to dig deeper when skepticism was raised by a family member. KENS 5 reports that authorities adjusted their line of inquiry, which has now led to the arrest of the neighbor on the grounds of murder and arson.
Surveillance footage from an elementary school across the street played a crucial role, as it allegedly captured Castaneda pacing with an "aggressive gait" near Amesquita's house before the incident. Following the concerning behavior captured on tape, "The affidavits says surveillance video shows Castaneda acting strangely and pacing back and forth in front of the victim's house in an 'aggressive gait' in the hours before the fire," according to KENS 5.
Video evidence reportedly shows a disturbing sequence where Castaneda is seen attacking Amesquita, ultimately dragging the body inside and subsequently igniting the house with what appears to be a lighter. In an attempt to destroy evidence, Castaneda is then seen on video discarding his clothes into the blazing inferno. "Video from a body-worn camera on one of the first responders also reportedly showed Castaneda leaving the neighborhood in a pickup truck once fire crews arrived to respond to the fire," reported KENS 5.
The investigation's persistence bore fruit on March 7, when detectives revisited the crime scene and discovered the clothes Castaneda attempted to incinerate. Currently held at the Bexar County Jail, the accused sees his bonds totaling $350,000 while he awaits further court proceedings. More details will be monitored as this chilling story develops.
