In a bold move to address the needs of her community, District 4 Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia stepped onto the national stage, joining the year's first National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors meeting. Garcia took the opportunity to lay out her advocacy priorities before influential ears at the NLC Legislative Action Committee, lobbying hard on behalf of her constituents back in San Antonio on March 9, as reported by the city’s official website.

Prior to President Joe Biden's address at the opening general session of the Congressional Cities Conference, a select batch of the NLC Board was invited to meet with him. Seizing the moment, Councilwoman Garcia invited President Biden to come down to San Antonio and to personally visit the Migrant Resource Center (MRC), aiming to directly showcase the local initiatives in place to assist migrants.

As the current chair of the Human Development (HD) Committee, Garcia is hard at work pushing for the reauthorization of the critical Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). This act underpins the federal government's expansive employment and training programs. Furthermore, she's rallying support for the RECOMPETE Program, which pours investment into struggling communities and links individuals with gainful employment opportunities. "Over the past five years, it’s been a privilege to share with others the transformative impact of voter-approved initiatives like Pre-K 4 SA, SA Ready to Work, and our Housing Bond," Garcia highlighted in a statement captured by the city's news release.

During the weekend, the HD Committee joined those invested in crime prevention and the leaders of NLC's constituency groups for a critical Immigration Roundtable. Here, the dialogue was open and forward-leaning, turning the spotlight onto the local effects of immigration and on the quest to find shared solutions. In line with the commitment to her district's needs, Garcia reportedly made a case for increased federal support for cities bearing the weight of immigration challenges, once again bringing the spotlight on San Antonio's MRC.

With a focus on empowering those historically left out of economic narratives, the Councilwoman moderated a panel of all women on Monday afternoon, titled "Aligning Workforce Development with Plans for Economic Growth." She facilitated discussions with officials hailing from a spectrum of U.S. departments and AmeriCorps, striking at the heart of what it means to craft effective workforce pathways for residents from underserved and underrepresented communities. Terrains traditional and novel are covered, from labor and education to transportation, each intersecting with the other in the service of progress.
