In a concerted effort to put a dent in the escalating fentanyl crisis, San Diego's finest have slapped the cuffs on nearly two dozen individuals. A recent sting operation by the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and the Homeland Security Investigation's Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team (F.A.S.T.) brought the heat to dealers peddling this deadly synthetic opioid throughout San Diego County.
During an intense 10-hour surge on the first of March, more than 60 officers and investigators from the SDPD's Narcotics Unit and F.A.S.T. joined forces to take down the poisonous spread of fentanyl in the area. According to the official statement, their toil netted more than 70 contacts, resulting in 9 felony collars, 8 misdemeanor arrests/citations, and the rounding up of 31 individuals for field interviews.
Not just content with arrests, the teams have also been pounding the pavement to raise fentanyl awareness. One of the fruits of their labor was making 15 outreach contacts to educate those at risk in the community. With fentanyl overdoses skyrocketing, these collaborative efforts show a strategic pivot towards not just enforcing the law but also spreading crucial knowledge about the dangers of opioid abuse.
