A jury in San Francisco delivered a guilty-verdict punch to a man who took his frustrations out on a storage facility door. Kyle Varela, 40, was convicted of misdemeanor vandalism after a jury trial, as announced by District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. The verdict came down after Varela was caught post-closing hours in a storage facility on Folsom Street.
The December drama unfolded when Varela, ignoring management's clear warnings, stayed behind at the storage facility and then decided to break a door with a metal pole. His actions, caught in the act, led to his arrest by San Francisco Police officers who were on the scene in short order. "The jury's verdict holds Mr. Varela accountable and sends a message that San Franciscans will not condone this conduct," DA Jenkins stated in a release.
Assistant District Attorney John Robles headed the prosecution with support from a team that included paralegals Joshua Nickchen and Andres Hernandez-Ruano, as well as the subpoena unit. Their collected efforts and evidence from the incident allowed prosecutors to secure the conviction. "Our commitment as prosecutors is unwavering," Robles remarked. "We are here to serve, pursue justice and ensure there is accountability."
Details surrounding the sentencing of Mr. Varela are still up in the air. He didn't show up for the reading of his own verdict. Now, depending on when he's snagged by authorities, he could be looking at probation or a year behind bars. Either way, the clear message from the DA's office is that vandalism won't be given a pass in the City by the Bay. The crime number for Varela's case is 23020574, as noted by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.
