A 20-year-old San Francisco man, Jeremy Rene Reyes, faced a judge on charges of sex abuse involving a minor, pleading not guilty in a San Francisco courtroom today.

Reyes is accused of several sex abuse felonies, including three counts of committing a lewd act upon a child and one count of contacting a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense, after authorities were tipped off by school staff to an alleged inappropriate relationship between Reyes and a student the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office said.

"We will now work diligently to pursue justice in this case and support this minor and their family throughout their healing process, my office will do everything in our power to ensure that children are safe in our schools and in our city," District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated, underscoring the commitment to child safety in education and community spaces. Reyes' alleged offenses have prompted a stark reminder of the dangers posed to children even within seemingly secure environments such as schools.

Reyes was arrested on March 5 after the school reported the suspected sexual relationship with a middle school student. As revealed by court proceedings, the victim and their family are now receiving support from the District Attorney’s Office Victim Services Division, which provides services to victims of crimes. Reyes is currently held in custody without bail after the prosecutors' motion was granted, given the perceived threat to public safety.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line or Text a Tip to TIP411. The case is set to proceed with a preliminary hearing on March 22, where the court will revisit the matter of Reyes' detention.
