In an effort to boost summer learning and enrichment opportunities for Seattle's K-12 students, the city has opened applications for a grant program aimed at community-based organizations and city agencies. The three-year grant, part of a Request for Investment (RFI) initiative, is intended to prepare students for academic success and transitions to college or careers. Noted on the Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning, the grant funding ranges from $30,000 to $80,000 per awardee for each summer, translating into intensive support for the most at-risk youths through 2026.
Targeted toward easing the inequities faced in education, the funding looks to shore up academic learning, social emotional learning, and college and career readiness. Prospective programs must stretch a minimum of four weeks and offer upwards of twenty hours per week of instruction. This to quickly respond to the unique needs of historically underserved communities, including students of color, English language learners, and students experiencing homelessness, according to the information stipulated in the grant guidelines.
The awarded strategies include academic instruction to address setbacks or accelerate learning, as well as enrichment opportunities like project-based activities and outdoor learning experiences. These experiences aim to cultivate essential skills such as critical thinking and communication while recognizing the importance of cultural identity. A focus on preparing for post-secondary education rounds out the program offerings, with components aimed at guiding youth through college planning and career exploration.
Interested organizations must demonstrate a commitment to racial equity and have a proven track record of serving communities farthest away from educational justice in order to qualify. The RFI specifies the importance of applicants' ability to deliver high-quality programs that are responsive to the interests and needs of youth. Award recipients will be those who have shown effectiveness in achieving positive outcomes through past summer programs, and are ready to deliver again. Applications are due by March 20, with the Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning stressing on applicants to apply before 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time deadline.
