Seattle's pioneering cupcake shop, Cupcake Royale, has shuttered its Ballard location, a mainstay that has sweetened the neighborhood since 2004. The closure, which took effect this past Sunday, marked the end of nearly two decades for the brand's flagship store at 2052 NW Market Street.
In an emotional farewell, Jody Hall, founder of Cupcake Royale, expressed the sentimental value of the Ballard shop. "While this wasn't our first location, it was the one that put us on the map, and literally helped birth the cupcake revolution across the US," Hall wrote, according to a statement obtained by KOMO News. The Ballard venue has not only been a bakery and café, but also the operational HQ for Cupcake Royale, housing both the baking space and the administrative team.
Despite the Ballard closure, Cupcake Royale fans can take solace as the company maintains its presence in Seattle, with existing locations in Madrona, West Seattle, downtown, and Burien staying open. Moreover, Hall shared plans to open a new pop-up store in Capitol Hill soon. "Thank you for being a part of our story and success in Ballard," Hall's note expressed appreciation to the community in a quote that KING 5 News reported. "We built this together. We, shared random acts of cupcakes. We sparked joy."
The Cupcake Royale brand has been at the forefront of the city's dessert scene, boasting the title of Seattle's first cupcake bakery. Its influence on local culture has been evident since it burst onto the scene. "Ballard is where this revolution began, it really put us on the map," Hall reminisced in an interview with KING 5 News. However, times change, and as Hall said, it's time to move on.
