Despite a downpour that threatened to rain on their parade, the Seattle community showed up in droves for the annual Pathway of Lights event, which lit up the night with a festive glow on December 9. Undeterred by the earlier stormy weather, organizers and staff braved the elements to set up a holiday spectacle that, according to the Seattle Parkways, earned "rave reviews from the community."
The skies cleared just in time for attendees to enjoy the twinkling lights on foot, while kids zipped around on scooters dressed in holiday cheer. However, one anticipated high-flying attraction didn't make it off the ground. "Unfortunately, the hot air balloons weren’t able to come due to the wet weather," the event organizers announced.
Cultural enrichment was no shortage either, with local schools, community groups, and bands performing across three stages. These acts drew large crowds, creating impromptu dance floors and singalongs in the open air. Nearby, kayaks adorned with seasonal decorations provided a floating light show on the lake.
And what's a holiday event without a special surprise? This year, Olaf — the beloved snowman from the "Frozen" franchise — made an unanticipated appearance, delighting children and parents alike. The sponsors, meanwhile, were kept busy throughout the evening, "with lines of people waiting to say hello."
More than just a feast for the eyes, the Pathway of Lights also served as a philanthropic opportunity. Community members brought in "hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food items for our local food bank, FamilyWorks," according to event organizers. This collective effort resulted in a substantial donation: "Together, we donated an impressive 505 pounds of food worth $1,090," attendees were told, both through onsite announcements and on the Seattle Parkways website post-event.
With the Pathway of Lights now a fixture in Seattle's holiday calendar, the community has once again demonstrated its festive spirit and commitment to helping those less fortunate. Marking the season with lights and goodwill, the city's residents can look back with pride on a celebration well done, and forward to next year's event with anticipation.
