Early Saturday morning, a routine traffic stop turned tragic when Snellville Police officers fatally shot 36-year-old Rashawn Johnson of Tucker, Georgia. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, Johnson was pulled over for not driving with headlights on US 78 (West Main Street) at Fountain Drive, near Piedmont Eastside Medical Center.
The situation escalated when Johnson, asked repeatedly by police to exit his vehicle, hesitated and expressed a desire to quickly call his mom. Despite producing identification upon request, Johnson was warned he would be arrested for obstruction if he did not comply. Detectives described that, upon returning to the Hyundai Tucson that Johnson was driving, the officer had to open the door himself after informing Johnson of his impending arrest, as detailed in a statement obtained by Channel 2 Action News.
What followed was a deadly encounter. The GBI reported that Johnson was holding a gun when the officer opened his vehicle door and refused to drop it when commanded. In a tense moment, Johnson fired his weapon, prompting the officers to return fire. The gunfire resulted in Johnson sustaining a fatal shot to the head and his death was confirmed at the scene.
While it remains uncertain whether the fatal bullet was from Johnson's own gun or an officer's, what is clear is the iron price of the altercation—Johnson's life. "He pointed the gun at himself after he was pulled over," Detective Jeff Manley said, according to a Channel 2 Action News interview. This heart-wrenching detail indicates a scene not just of confrontation, but of apparent desperation.
No officers were injured during the incident, and the Snellville Police Department has deferred to the GBI for an independent investigation, as is standard procedure. An autopsy on Johnson is to be performed by the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office.
