A high school student is currently recovering in hospital following a stabbing incident at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia. The altercation led to one student being hospitalized and another promptly arrested in the wake of the violence that unfolded Thursday morning, as confirmed by school officials.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a call for help was issued just after 10 a.m., resulting in police swiftly to arrive on scene. Gwinnett County School District spokesperson Bernard Watson stated, "Violence and this type of behavior will not be tolerated at Brookwood High School." The assailant, a student of the same school, reportedly fled the campus but was apprehended within 35 minutes in a nearby neighborhood. A knife was also recovered by authorities.
Although Watson did not delve into specifics regarding the victim's condition, Principal Brett Savage addressed parents and guardians in an email, saying the student "is reported to have undergone surgery and is recovering at the hospital," and that he is expected to remain there for a few more days. Savage wrote, "I know you join me in wishing the young man a speedy recovery. We look forward to his return to school."
Questions have arisen over the school's decision not to initiate a lockdown following the stabbing. Instead, the school operated under a medical emergency protocol. "It was not a lockdown because within minutes of the incident they had eyes of the potential suspect and were tracking him as he left the building," explained Watson. This approach ostensibly seeks to not disrupt the academic environment more than is absolutely necessary.
Within the local community and the walls of Brookwood High, the incident has undoubtedly shaken the sense of safety that many hold dear. As articulated by Brookwood High Principal Brett Savage in a letter to parents—which Patch.com acquired—he assured the families that the school "remains safe and is operating on its normal schedule."
The principal also reiterated the school's resolve in a follow-up letter, noting that the accused student is "facing serious criminal charges and the maximum school disciplinary consequences." Highlighting the school's commitment to security, he urged anyone with concerns to report them through various channels provided by the school.
