The City of Surprise is laying out the welcome mat for local teens looking for summer work and a taste of the professional world. Their Summer Youth Internship Program, targeting income-eligible youngsters aged between 15 and 19, is on the prowl for applicants until March 31, as announced by the city officials. This initiative, green-lighted by the City Council, pledges to not only give teens a chance to earn some cash but also to arm them with valuable work experience.
For those ready to quickly dive into the labor pool, the program kicks off June 10, spanning six weeks, with interns set to work up to 25 hours weekly. They’re not just earning experience but will pocket minimum wage for their efforts. According to the City’s announcement, the young recruits will be thrust into professional development training across various municipal departments.
It's not all work and no play; these lucky interns will have the chance to mix it up with tasks ranging from supporting the Public Works Department to coordinating activities for seniors via the Human Service & Community Vitality Department. But, there are some hoops to jump through first. Hopeful applicants must be full-time students, Surprise residents, with the legal right to work in the U.S., and with access to reliable transport. They also need to secure a letter of recommendation and pass the bar of a family income at or below 120% of the area median income. And let's not forget the paperwork - applying entails submitting income verification along with the application.
Danielle Osborne, reachable at [email protected] or by dialing 623.222.1034, is the go-to contact for obtaining applications and learning more about income eligibility. Post-application, qualified teens should brace themselves for a selection process filled with interviews slated for April and May. And by mid-May, the crème de la crème will be notified if they've been picked. Of course, there’s the fine print – all final participants must pass any pre-employment screening deemed necessary by the City.
