After a near month-long manhunt, DeKalb County police have apprehended the suspect accused of fatally shooting a man outside a Zaxby's restaurant in Lithonia, authorities announced Friday. The DeKalb County Police Department confirmed the arrest of the individual involved in the death of 24-year-old Kenyon Jones, which occurred on the evening of February 6th following an altercation inside the establishment located on Panola Road.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the confrontation, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, indicate that the argument spilled outside where Jones was shot multiple times and despite the department's efforts to solicit the public's assistance in locating the suspect through repeated requests made no specific details regarding the identification or the capture method of the suspect have been disclosed.
The fatal incident drew significant attention when DeKalb County police issued a warning describing the then-at-large suspect as "armed and dangerous," as police intensified their efforts to track down the assailant, leading to the eventual breakthrough in the case, as confirmed by an official Facebook post issued by the department.
While further information on the suspect's identity and pending charges has yet to be released, the aftermath of the shooting as outlined in a statement by the DeKalb County police and acquired by Atlanta News First, indicates that Jones was followed from the restaurant by the suspect who then shot him twice in the back and, after the initial gunshots, began to physically assault Jones before fleeing the scene of the crime.
Responding officers discovered Jones with life-threatening injuries around 9 p.m.; he was transferred to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The capture of the suspect marks a significant milestone in the case, providing a semblance of closure to a community shaken by the incident and allowing for the legal process to address the harrowing events of that February night.
