The streets of Nashville reverberated with tragedy last summer, and now, nearly nine months later, the long arm of the law has caught up with the culprit. Marcus Fortney, a 35-year-old man, was placed under arrest yesterday for his alleged involvement in the high-speed drag race that ended in disaster for 28-year-old motorcyclist Kyle Holleran, according to a statement from the Nashville government.
The fateful incident that snatched away a young life took place on June 17, when Holleran reportedly spun out of control on his Harley Davidson along the 4500 block of Nolensville Pike, ultimately colliding with an unforgiving concrete wall. Fortney, behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang, was allegedly drag racing with Holleran at a death-defying speed nearing 80 miles per hour just before the crash unfolded, the Nashville government reported.
Previous encounters with the law paint a troubling picture of Fortney's record on the road. Only a year before the incident, in 2022, he had been convicted of driving under the influence in Davidson County. Adding to his scofflaw status, his Mississippi driver's license was suspended at the time of the deadly encounter.
Fortney now faces many charges that could see him behind bars for years. The charges include drag racing with serious bodily injury, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license, and failure to yield, resulting in a death. In the meantime, he's temporarily escaped custody with his release on a $26,000 bond.
